Properties and Characteristics of the Waters of the Sorano Thermal Baths
Since ancient times, humans have used thermal waters for the treatment of various bodily ailments for healing, detoxifying, or rehabilitative purposes.
Depending on the composition of the mineral water, it is possible to find a remedy for numerous pathologies: diseases of the respiratory tract, dermatological diseases, rheumatism, osteoarthritis, vascular diseases, and in cases of rehabilitation thanks to the beneficial action of sulfur on joint cartilages and the anti-inflammatory capacity of sodium bicarbonate.
Most mineral waters are of meteoric origin and therefore follow the classic hydrogeological cycle; there are also fossil waters made up of underground basins that have been trapped over geological ages between rocks. There are also so-called mixed waters, which result from the mixture of the above types.
During their underground journey, the waters come into contact with rocks and become mineralized, acquiring the chemical and physical properties that make them therapeutically active; the characteristics of each water therefore depend on the terrain it has passed through.
The thermal water of Sorano, of the bicarbonate-magnesium-calcium type, which naturally springs at a constant temperature of 37.4°C, stands out from almost all other thermal waters in the national territory. In fact, we find that only one other facility is capable of providing therapeutic services aimed at the treatment of dermatological diseases, particularly for individuals suffering from psoriasis and dermatitis.
Thermal therapy with water rich in mineral salts, sulfate-calcium-magnesium, is based on the healing properties of magnesium with the aim of inducing clinical remission of dermatitis, thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-pruritic, sebum-regulating, antioxidant, keratoplastic-keratolytic effects (promoting the shedding of the most superficial layers of the skin and stimulating the production of a new, healthy, elastic, and soft stratum corneum) and regulation of skin circulation.
